ELIZABETHTOWN - The Essex County Republican Committee threw its collective weight behind Clinton County Assistant District Attorney Kristy Sprague for district attorney and incumbent Henry Hommes for sheriff during an endorsement meeting March 31.
Sprague garnered 8,254 votes in the race for DA, while first-term incumbent Julie Garcia received 3,623 votes and Lake Placid attorney Brian Barrett, 215.
In the race for sheriff, three-term incumbent Henry Hommes easily defeated challenger Michael "Ike" Tyler of Westport 11,369 to 723.
Area Republicans packed the Old County Courthouse in Elizabethtown and listened as the five potential candidates addressed the committee, laying out their agendas for the two county-wide seats.
The GOP endorsement is a coveted one in the county where registered Republicans outnumber Democrats by a wide margin. Help with carrying petitions and in fundraising comes with the GOP backing.
Candidates who remain in the race will face a primary vote in September.
