The final concert by the GMCMF was an evening of Beethoven: the Opus 96 Sonata #10 in G Major; the Opus 97 Trio in B- flat Major ("Archduke"); and from Opus 59, the no. 3 in C Major. Arik Braude, violin and Dmitri Shteinberg, piano, gave a very comprehensive reading of this violin sonata. Tempi were exact; where allowed by the composer, the melodic lines rose gloriously, especially in the second movement. All in all it was a super performance of this work, and the two performers received justifiable curtain calls. The Opus 97 trio was played by Elizabeth Chang, violin; Stefan Kartman, cello; and Paul Orgel, piano. The performance was marked by great indecisiveness of playing, informed by a great intellectual understanding of the music, and most importantly a living, breathing attention to the emotions involved in the music. With that combination of playing by the three performers, it was inevitable that there be several curtain calls at the conclusion of the work. The opus 59 of Beethoven is comprised of four string quartets written for the Russian Count Razumovski. The second Quartet was the first chamber music selection that I ever bought, and I grew to love it deeply. The third Quartet is filled with great melodies, and the performers Katherine Luchtenberg, first violin; Stephanie Ezerman, second violin; Matthew Daline, viola; and Steven Pologe, cello seemed to delight in the performing of the work, and were very much attentive to all the smallest of details, which was clearly signaled by the degree with which there was eye contact between and among the performers during the entire Quartet. Once again, the performers were greeted by multiple curtain calls at the conclusion of the brilliant allegro molto. It was an auspicious raining down of this years curtain for the festival, which has now ingrained itself in my mind and in my attendance as one of the most important events musically during the month of June here in Vermont. I was not able to take advantage of the any of the master classes that are taught; I was not able to attend a student performance, but I understand from trustworthy friends, that these were marvelous also. So you should do what I am going to do namely, mark out the Wednesdays and Fridays in late June and early July of 2009 so that I will be certain to be able to attend the festival's genuinely exciting performances and Ill try to remember to save room for a master class or two and some student performances.
