RUTLAND Bruce Bouchard, director of the Paramount Theatre, announced last that a multi-media concert experience, The Freakers Ball, featuring four top regional bands, will follow the internationally renown Rutland Halloween Parade at the Paramount Theatre, on Halloween night, Friday, Oct. 31. The Freakers Ball was conceived by Tom OBrien (Paramounts technical director), local rocker Duane Carleton and Bouchard as a nostalgic rock and roll experience, reminiscent of the great ballroom shows of yesteryear (The Fillmores East and West, the Avalon Ballroom and Winterland). Featured at the concert are four of Vermonts best and most original bands as well as a psychedelic light show provided by Dark Star Productions and sound by Atomic Productions. Headlining the event is Rutlands Duane Carleton and his band the Backwoods Messiahs. Carleton who has been compared to Bruce Springsteen, John Mellencamp, and Bob Seger writes and performs songs about working class struggles and their heroic and defiant struggles to find and live the American Dream. Duane further ups the ante by announcing that The Freakers Ball will be the occasion of his CD release for his much anticipated follow up album American Boy which features guest talents of Garth Hudson of the Band, Meshell Ndegeocello, and Joseph Wooten of the Steve Miller Band and the Wooten Brothers. Theater doors open at 8 p.m. with the Jim Gilmour Band taking the stage at 8:30. Gilmour will release his newest C.D. Flat World at the Halloween concert. Next up is Crazyhearse. Hailing from central Vermont, the group is one of the more unique bands performing today. The bands sound is best described in their own worlds as psycho-folk-a-billy. Third on the bill is Bonafide Dregs. The band bring an upbeat blend of rock, jam, pop and funk to the table. Dregs is a rock-solid staple of the Vermont scene and is guaranteed to bring a high energy set to the table. Tickets for The Freakers Ball are available at the Paramount box office or can be ordered on-line at www.paramountlive.org. Doors will open at 8 p.m. and the concert will conclude at 2 a.m. Beer, wine and soft drinks will be available as well as food provided by Best Moon Catering.
