Since this is my first winter living in Lake Placid, Ive gotten the opportunity to see my new home displaying its holiday spirit. Downtown is adorned with festive wreaths and garland, the stores have all the seasonal music playing, and families are arriving to spend some time off with us and enjoy the sometimes blustery weather. Looking back on 2007, I think most of us would agree that it was a fantastic year in the Adirondacks. All the great athletic competitions were well attended and provided excitement for everyone, Whiteface Mountain opened early with a long and powdery season ahead, and local retailers continued to offer the great service and shopping experience that drew people like me to get up and move to the area! The New Year is a time of transition where we look back on our accomplishments of the past year, maybe what we would like to do differently next time, and focus on a new outlook for the coming year. Its a time when people join in and work to help others, and a time when resolutions are made (and most of those relating to exercise are quickly broken). For the Bureaus part, we are the most proud of the Lake Placid Branding initiative that was started in 2007. This has been a project thats been discussed for a number of years, and for the first time, weve been able to secure the funds and pull community leaders and area representatives from all walks to help us through this project. A survey currently being conducted will help us understand the Lake Placid image that is in the mind of our potential visitors. With this information, the committee will come together in 2008 to help craft a brand for Lake Placid. While we understand that this task isnt going to be easy, we also know the result will be worth it. In addition, were gratified to know that well have partners within the community that will help us work toward making 2008, and beyond, prosperous and vibrant. So, to all of you, we at the Lake Placid/Essex County Visitors Bureau wish you Happy Holidays and well see you in the New Year.
