CHESTER - Volunteer firefighters responded quickly to a night blaze at the First Baptist Church of Chester located on Route 11 (Main Street) April 25. The fire was successfully contained by local fire crews working in tandem to save the historic church and adjoining Civil War Memorial.
When firefighters arrived on scene, they said smoke could be seen pouring out of the tall steeple and a second story church window.
Local police closed Route 11 during the fire event to permit firefighting equipment and police easy access to the central village church site. They later reopened Chester's main road to traffic early in the morning April 26.
The church's pastor, Rev. Tom Charlton, was unavailable for comment. Charlton graduated locally from Green Mountain Union High School in 1984. He is also Scoutmaster of Chester Boy Scout Troop 206 and a trustee of Chester Academy.
