CHESTER - Volunteer firefighters respond quickly to a blaze at the First Baptist Church of Chester on Route 11 (Main Street) April 25.
The fire was successfully contained by several fire crews working together to save the historic church.
Firefighters said smoke poured out from the steeple and a second story window.
Local police had closed Route 11 during the fire event to permit firefighting equipment and police easy access to the central village church site. They later reopened the road to traffic early in the morning April 26.
The church's pastor, the Rev. Tom Charlton, was unavailable for comment.
Charlton graduated locally from Green Mountain Union High School in 1984. He is also Scoutmaster of Chester Boy Scout Troop 206 and a trustee of Chester Academy.
Detectives are currently investigating the fire which may have been deliberately set.
