SHELBURNE Guests at the American Cancer Societys Hope Lodge were treated to a gourmet dinner on Friday night prepared by the Inn at Shelburne Farms Head Chef Rick Gencarelli. The five-course meal, made as part of the nationwide Stand Up to Cancer television event, was made from fresh, local ingredients grown at Shelburne Farms and the surrounding area. The Inn at Shelburne Farms staff and Gencarelli graciously donated time and efforts to the event. Gencarelli, co-author of Cooking With Shelburne Farms: Food and Stories From Vermont, was invited to be the Hope Lodges first celebrity guest chef because of his reputation for creating world-class dishes from beneficial, local ingredients. The Hope Lodge provides free, temporary lodging to cancer patients who travel to Burlington for extended treatment. Hope Lodge meals are typically prepared by volunteers or a patients caregiver. The American Cancer Society is the nationwide, community-based, voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer through research, education, advocacy, and service. The dinner, prepared by Gencarelli and his intern assistant Adam Burnham, featured an heirloom tomato salad with tomatoes from the Market Garden at Shelburne Farms, a delicious pasta dish with foraged mushrooms, Shelburne Farms lamb with eggplant and Cheese Cake with fresh berries for dessert.
