Indian Lake Central School Board members Tuesday, March 20 voted unanimously to adopt a 2012-2013 budget totaling $5,822,831.
The budget represents a $39,515 — 0.68 percent — increase over the 2011-2012 budget, and it includes a 2.9 percent tax levy increase.
Board President Jon Vorhees and Vice President David Harrington commended all involved in the budget process for the hard work and cooperation evident in bringing the budget in line with the state’s so-called “2 percent tax cap.” There has been much written about the complexity of the formula to arrive at the actual cap for each individual district and it is estimated that the tax cap formula — which includes exemptions — could have allowed an ILCSD budget to increase large enough to have resulted in a 3.9 percent increase in the tax levy.
There was discussion among the board members about the need to explain the budget increase in the face of the misunderstanding in the community regarding the intricacies of the cap formula.
Harrington noted that many good articles have been written that explained these intricacies and helped members of the community better understand the true nature and application of the cap.
With this board adoption, the budget will be sent to the voters, who last year approved a $5.78 million 2011-2012 budget representing a decrease of 0.34 percent from the previous year’s budget.
In covering other subjects, Principal David Snide told board members that ILCS has been awarded the status of being an Essential Elements Schools to Watch by the New York State Education Department. There are only 18 schools so awarded this status in the state of New York.
Among, other business, the board reviewed and approved bids for the upcoming construction project. Additional discussion surrounded the use of a smaller generator available from the Water Plant project as a means of garnering some savings in the project. The board also emphasized the importance of moving forward given the timing needed for the project’s physical commencement and completion.
