SARANAC LAKE - Do you have the button?
The King and Queen for the annual Saranac Lake Winter Carnival will be crowned during Coronation at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 4, followed by a reception at the B.P.O. Elks Lodge No. 1508.
The Coronation, which is preceded by the 12th annual Past Royalty mixer and dinner on Thursday, Feb. 3, kicks off 10 days of fun, games, events, a parade and three spectacular fireworks displays (including the torchlight skiing event at Mount Pisgah).
Events start at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 5, with the Ice Palace Fun Run, along with the 18th annual Business and Professional Women's Chocolate Festival at the Harrietstown Town Hall from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.; the Lutheran Church Women's Craft Sale from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.; the Petrova Winter Carnival at Petrova Elementary School from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.; The Adirondack Arc Curling exhibition at the state boat launch on Lake Flower at 11 a.m.; the Paul Smith's College woodsmen's exhibition at Riverside Park at 11 a.m.; the NBT Bank Ladies fry pan toss at Riverside Park at 12:30 p.m.; the Third Women's Civic Chamber Treasure Hunt (Knights of the Round Table Search for the Carnival Grail) starting at Riverside Park at 2:30 p.m.; the 13th Saranac Lake Figure Skating spaghetti dinner from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at the Methodist Church (call 891-3434 for takeouts); and the lighting of the Ice Palace, followed by the Guide Boat Realty fireworks display, at 7 p.m.
Events on Sunday, Feb. 6 will be the White Stag Downhill Ski Races at the Mount Pisgah Ski Center at 11 a.m.; the Arctic Bar-B-Que from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Mount Pisgah; an ultimate frisbee tournament from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Petrova Athletic Fields; and a 9-pin no-tap bowling tournament at Romano's Saranac Lanes from 2 to 5 p.m.; and The Spike of Ice Icicle Contest at the state boat launch at 2:30 p.m. (judging at 4 p.m.).
Several events will happen at 7 p.m. on Monday. Feb. 7, including a classic film viewing sponsored by the Saranac Lake Classic Film Festival; an interfaith celebration service at St. Luke's Episcopal Church; bingo at the Saranac Lake Adult Center; and firemen's broomball at the Saranac Lake Civic Center. Broomball will have two sessions, with the first at 7 p.m. and the second following.
Tuesday, Feb. 8, will feature a scavenger hunt for middle school students at the Saranac Lake Youth Center at 3:30 p.m.; a grand marshal reception at 5:30 p.m. at the B.P.O. Elks Lodge No. 1508, followed by the royalty dinner at 6:30 p.m.; and torchlight skiing at Mount Pisgah at 6 p.m., followed by a fireworks display.
There will be the Mac's Canoe Livery Snowshoe Races at Dewey Mountain starting at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 9, with the 24th Annual Figure Slating Show taking place at the Saranac Lake Civic Center at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 10.
Mount Pisgah will be the site of the Adirondack Bank innertube races on Friday, Feb. 11 at 10 a.m. Other events include the 22nd annual winter book sale at the Saranac Lake Free Library from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; the "Giving Paws" benefit for the Tri-Lakes Humane Society at the Artist's Guild from 5 to 7 p.m.; a concert by Sara Milonovich with Daisycutter at BluSeed Studios at 7:30 p.m.; the NBT Bank children's skating races at the Civic Center at 12:30 p.m.; the Rotary Club variety show at the Harrietstown Town Hall at 7:30 p.m.; and firemen's broomball at the Civic Center (time TBA).
On Saturday, Feb. 12, the Gala Parade lineup starts at noon on Lake Colby Drive, with the parade stepping off at 1 p.m. on Broadway and Main Street, from Ampersand Ave. to the LaPan Highway, which will be followed by a band concert at the Harrietstown Town Hall.
Other events of Feb. 12 include breakfast at McDonald's with Grimace and Carnival characters from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m.; the Mason's pancake breakfast at the Saranac Lake Adult Center from 8:30 to 11 a.m.; a meet the Carnival characters event from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Ice Palace; the winter book sale at the Saranac Lake Free Library from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.; the Lions Club chili sale at the Harrietstown Town Hall from 10:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.; the Paul Smith's College woodsmen's exhibition at Riverside Park at 11 a.m.; the Paul Smith's College alumni reunion from noon until 4 p.m.; and a dance with the Six Foot Midget Band at Hotel Saranac from 9 p.m. until midnight.
Along with the McHugh Memorial Pond Hockey tournament, other events of Sunday, Feb. 12, include adult cross-country ski races at Dewey Mountain at 10 a.m.; the snowflake volleyball tournament at the civic center's Rotary Field at 11 a.m.; snowshoe softball at the Elks Field on John Munn Road at 11 a.m.; kids cross-country ski races at Dewey Mountain at noon; Snowy Owl face painting for children at the Harrietstown Town Hall from 12:30 to 3 p.m.; the kiddie parade from the Saranac Lake Free Library to the Town Hall at 2 p.m.; the 16th annual Winter Carnival Baroque Concert at the Methodist Church at 3 p.m.; a lasagna dinner at the Methodist church at 5:30 p.m.; the Cape Air Carnival Slide Show at the Ice Palace at 7:30 p.m.; and the final gala fireworks display at the Ice Palace at 8 p.m.
