SOUTH STARKSBORO The Friends of the Jerusalem Schoolhouse in South Starksboro are hosting a Celebrate Summer Penny Fair and Ice Cream Social Saturday, June 21 to raise awareness about the community building and the groups efforts to renovate and update the one-room schoolhouse. The schoolhouse is a municipally owned building that has seen only occasional use by community members since closing its doors to students back in the 1960s. Now, a new group the Friends of the Jerusalem Schoolhouse is trying to bring the building to life and make it central to the community once again. It needs a new heating system so it can be heated year-round, new wiring and plumbing, a kitchen makeover and a handicapped accessible entrance. Organizer Nancy Orvis said they plan to apply for grants, do more local fundraisers and appeal to volunteer workers to accomplish their goals. The FUNraiser promises to be an afternoon of old-fashioned entertainment, with sack races, an egg-on-spoon race, bean bag toss and more. There will be live music, ice cream, cotton candy and popcorn. The event will be held rain or shine and is a great way to spend a summer afternoon with the family, celebrating the long-awaited arrival of summer and helping to raise awareness of an exciting new community project.
