When I began this project last fall I worked from a copy of the Johnsburg Enlistment Records abstracted by Lewis Waddell at the NYS Archives and copied by Joan Reynolds in 1995. There are 102 names on this list and my columns so far have listed each of these men.
I also had a list of 127 Civil War soldiers buried in our local cemeteries compiled by Doris Patton when she was town Historian. I cross referenced these and found the names of 67 soldiers that did not appear in the Johnsburg Enlistment Records. I assumed these were veterans who moved to Johnsburg after the war and are buried locally. In some cases I later found that assumption was wrong. After cross referencing that list against the 1860 Johnsburg Census, provided by our present day Town Historian Joann Smith, I realized some of these men were Johnsburg residents who just enlisted elsewhere.
During the war enlistment quotes where assigned to different localities. Where quotas were harder to meet, enlistment bonuses were higher. Many of the Civil War veterans from Johnsburg actually enlisted in Plattsburgh which was apparently paying higher bonuses than were paid locally. In a poor rural area like Johnsburg every extra dollar was helpful to parents and wives left behind.
This week's list of Civil War veterans all enlisted elsewhere and are buried in Bates Cemetery on Goodman Road in Johnsburg. If you have any information on these men, or men from previous columns, I'd appreciate hearing from you as I prepare for a special presentation at the Tannery Pond Community Center in North Creek in September of 2011.
