NORTH CREEK - Large snowfalls early this season have made the area a virtual winter-wonderland for children playing outside.
But healthy outdoor fun can quickly turn to tragedy if children do not stay clear of roadsides.
This week the Town of Johnsburg Highway Superintendent, Daniel Hitchcock, issued a public warning to community parents.
Relating a recent "near miss" incident in a neighboring community involving a plow vehicle and children playing in a snowbank, Hitchcock wants to remind everyone to stay clear of roadways.
"Right now all of the Highway crews are cutting the shoulders back because the snowbanks are so high," Hitchcock said. "If there are small kids playing out by the roads or digging tunnels into piles of snow you run the risk of having an accident.
"We really need parents to keep an eye on their kids and not allow them to play on, or tunnel into, the snowbanks along the road."
