June is Dairy Month. It is an annual tradition that originated in 1937 to celebrate our dairy industry and its contributions to our society. This tradition has evolved over the years to reflect on dairy foods, the industry and the cooperation between farmers and the community.
Our dairy farmers supply us with an essential and wholesome product, MILK,that is being used for fluid consumption and the creation of cheese, yogurt, ice cream, cottage cheese, butter and a rich variety of ingredients that truly benefit our health.
Milk provides a unique package of nine essential nutrients that include Calcium, Protein, Vitamin A, Vitamin D, Vitamin B12, Potassium, Riboflavin, Niacin and Phosphorus.
The USDA's new MyPlate shows a visual of a serving of dairy products alongside a plate to illustrate how to build a healthy eating plan and the importance of consuming at least one serving of dairy at every meal.
Our dairy industry is also an important part of our economy, creating thousands of jobs.
It has been stated that nine cows equates to 1 job. As you tour around your community this month, look at the investments made on our farm operations, and all the businesses that are connected to serve our farm operations as well as the investments made by companies to convert milk into high quality finished products.
In the Northeast we continue to grow jobs in our industry.
We have seen in recent years new companies and existing companies continue to invest significant dollars to produce wonderful dairy products.
The dairy industry is an important economic engine in our Northeast economy.
Next time you take a "dairy" break, think about where it comes from and what it takes for you to enjoy the product.
This month thank a farmer for what they do. They value and appreciate the support you and the communities have provided over the years.
On behalf of the Cooperative staff, we recognize the importance of our dairy farmers and thank them for what they do everyday. It is a privilege to work with and for them, and we are proud of the quality milk they produce!
Celebrate June is Dairy Month - pour one more glass of milk and salute your local dairy farmers.
