LAKE PLACID The 19th annual Summit Lacrosse Tournament will take place Wednesday, August 6-10. The four-day amateur event is the largest of its kind in North America featuring 95 teams from across the United States and Canada. In years past the tournament has seen teams from as far away as England and received inquires from teams in Japan. The event, founded by George Leveille owner of Adirondack Lacrosse Promotions, Inc. premiered in 1990 as a seven team tournament. The games were originally played on fields owned by the Lake Placid Central School, but as the tournee grew, Leveille saw a need for a larger venue. Due to the size of our tournament and the obstacles we were faced with on a yearly basis, we were in need of new fields, said Leveille. I was very pleased with the support from the Town of North Elba who really stepped up to improve the facilities we will christen with this years tournament. The six new North Elba Athletic Fields located behind the airport in North Elba feature great soil for drainage, which is important as the tournament will be played rain-or-shine. Games begin as early as 8 a.m. and end at approximately 7 p.m. each day. The event offers eight different divisions of competition and registers a large number of returning teams every year. Over 60 mens teams come back year after year, added Leveille. The tournament is family-friendly, and officials enforce a strict zeo tolerance policy throughout the event. There is no fighting and no alcohol abuse on my watch, stated Leveille. This is a quality family event and I reserve the right to not only kick out the player, but also the players team, of anyone who acts inappropriately during the tournament on the field or about town. Luckily, we have a good group of players and families each year policing themselves and each other. The tournament grounds offer a vendor city, complete with food and beverage refreshment. Sport tents will be on hand. Unfortunately, the bleachers for the new fields wont be in place in time for the opening game whistle, so attendees are asked to bring their own chairs.
