LAKE PLACID - Indian Lake/Long Lake had seemed in control through much of the game, but a late-game rally by the Blue Bombers allowed them to grab a 5-4 win and end the Orange's season in the Section VII Class D softball semifinals June 2.
Kaylie Miller struck out five and walked none, retiring the side through the first three innings as the Orange took a 2-0 lead in the first inning with sacrifice RBIs by both her and Carli Reynolds.
"We knew Lake Placid was a very good hitting team," said Indian Lake/Long Lake head coach Dave Olbert. "I thought we would need at least seven or eight hits to beat them, but I was very impressed with our pitching and our excellent defense."
Still, the Blue Bombers would not be denied for long. Chelsea Preston got Lake Placid's first hit to lead off the fourth, stole second, then slid home on an RBI single by Danielle Balestrini.
"It took a little bit to get our bats going," said Lake Placid head coach Donna Moody. "Once we got runners on, it was a matter of time before we scored."
Preston got another hit to lead off the sixth and was batted in by a bunt single from Balestrini. With two outs, Morgan Caudill singled and an infield pop fly from Jenna McGreevy was dropped, allowing two more runners to score. Ayla Thompson drove in a fifth run before the inning ended.
Indian/Long Lake nearly found the answer in the seventh. With two out and the bases loaded, Allison Pine drove in two runs with a single, but Lake Placid nabbed the final out to advance to the final.
Reynolds had two of the Orange's four hits and Murphy Farrell added one. Both Reynolds and Pine got to base three out of four times up.
Winning pitcher Mackenzie Kemmerer struck out five and walked nine.
