VOORHEESVILLE, NY Larry W. Phinney, age 72, passed away Sunday evening, December 16, 2007 at the Hospice Inn, St. Peters Hospital in Albany, NY. Larry was born in Port Henry, NY on April 28, 1935. He was the son of the late Robert Phinney and Evelyn Winters Phinney. He was raised and educated in Port Henry, and was a four year letterman in football and baseball at Port Henry High. He married Jean Strieble of Moriah in 1956. In 1959, Larry and Jean moved to Voorheesville where they built their home and raised their children. Larry served in the United States Army Reserves with the 364th General Hospital Unit of Albany, NY from 1956 to 1964. Since 1959, Larry made a career in various aspects of the wholesale building material business. Larry was well known and respected by his colleagues and customers in the tri-state area. He estimated traveling 1.5 million miles encompassing an area from Westchester County to Clinton County. After dedicating 41 years in sales and service, Larry retired from ESCY, Spindle City Distributing, Inc.in Waterford, NY in 2000. Larry was an avid sports fan, and passed his love of sports to his children, Eric and Sonja. He proudly took them to see great teams and players at the original Yankee Stadium, Shea Stadium, Giants Stadium, Fenway Park, Boston Garden and a yearly trip to the Baseball Hall of Fame game in Cooperstown. He coached for many years in the New Scotland Babe Ruth baseball league. For many years, Larry was active in various bowling leagues around the area. Additionally, Larry was an avid reader and he especially loved gathering knowledge about the Adirondacks and his ancestors. He was a valued, concerned citizen of many local issues involving highway safety and public access. His kindness and thoughtfulness was always appreciated by his neighbors and friends. He is survived by his loving wife, Jean of 51 years. He was the best loving and proud Dad to his son, Eric Larry Phinney and daughter, Sonja Jean (Craig) Johnston and his two adored grandchildren, Peyton Alexander and Anjoli Marie Johnston. He is survived by his brother, Ned (Debra) Phinney and one nephew, Barry Denton, his Aunt Audrey (Allen) Masterson, Uncle Gerald (Charlene) Phinney and Aunt Lula Winters Ware. He is also survived by many cousins. He was predeceased by his only sister, Judy Phinney Denton. Larry chose to donate his body to the Albany Medical College Anatomical Gift Program. He believed his donation to medicine as a way of continuing to serve humanity. Internment of cremains will be in the South Moriah cemetery. Friends and relatives are invited to attend Larrys Memorial Service at the Moriah United Methodist Church in Moriah, NY on Saturday, December 29th, 2007 at 1 pm with Reverend Chilton McPheeters officiating.
