WESTPORT - Author and Westport resident Colin Wells will give a talk entitled "Faith and Reason, Together Again for the First Time" at the Wadhams Free Library on Wednesday, Jan. 21, at 7:30 p.m.
Wells, who writes the Westport column for the Valley News, said that he will focus on the history, not the metaphysics, of the subject.
"I'm interested in how the relationship has played out in history, rather than in how faith and reason relate to each other in any cosmic way," he explained, "and when we look at the history, our whole picture of the subject changes. I think I can promise some surprises."
Having studied at UCLA and Oxford University, Wells has written hundreds of educational reference articles on ancient, medieval, and modern history and culture. His books include "Sailing from Byzantium" (2006) and "A Brief History of History" (2008), both the subjects of earlier talks he's given at the library, where he also serves as a board member. This talk will be adapted from his current book project, "The Longest War: The Epic Clash of Faith and Reason, from Abraham to Zygotes."
The talk is presented as part of the library's Wednesdays at Wadhams lecture series, and admission is free.
