CHAZY-The Chazy Public Library's Friends of the Library took a tour through the new location on Fiske Road Feb. 26, but they didn't come empty-handed.
"They gave us two $5,000 gifts,"explained the library's board of trustees president George Brendler. "So, $10,000 towards the renovation of the building. They came to visit and they've been very supportive."
"That's our role, is to help the library by raising funds,"said Friends president Carolyn Harding. "We saved it up from some special events we did. We do a Christmas Open House, where we raffle off beautiful baskets and so on. We do a townwide yard sale in July ... We do a wonderful book sale."
The total donation came from a year's worth of fundraising.
However, for Harding, the big part of the day was seeing how far the new building has come.
"It's wonderful. I mean really the amount of space we're going to have is three times what we have now, if not more," said Harding. "It'll all be fresh and new and plenty of space to do story hour with the kids. Teenagers have their own little area where they'll have computers. And we'll have computers for adults. It's going to be just a wonderful place."
Once the building is a functioning library, the organization, which has been supporting the library for 58 years, will continue with their usual focus.
"After the new library is done we'll continue raising money because we give a scholarship to Chazy High School. ... [and] we buy and augment books for the library,"said Harding.
"The mission is to be the public face ... of the library," she added. "We do things like story hour for children. Sometimes we have a guest speaker and you have to have a stipend for things like that. Special displays. There's lots of different things the friends have done over the years and we'll continue to do."
