SCHROONLAKE-Spring is here, the ice is thinning and time is running out to purchase Schroon Lake Lions Ice Out tickets.
Each winter members of the Lions Club place a wireless ice-out device on Schroon Lake, which is triggered when the weight drops through the ice, recording the exact date and time the ice lets loose.
Entrants select the date and time they believe this will happen.
Prizes include 30 percent of ticket sales for first place, 15 percent for second place and 5 percent for third place. Lions expect to sell about $2,000 worth of tickets.
The winner will be the person with the closest time selected.
In 2010 the ice broke at 10:18 a.m. on April 2. In 2009 the ice broke at 4:09 p.m. on April 19.
Tickets are $1 each and will be sold until March 31. Tickets can be purchased from any Lions member, at the Schroon Lake Chamber of Commerce, Flanagan's Pub and Friedman Reality.
"The Schroon Lake Lions Club is a total service group, with 100 percent of all proceeds going back into our community projects," said Lion Patti Mehm. "Together we can help the community with all proceeds supporting numerous local organizations, as well as offering scholarships for college and summer camps for our local students, providing eyeglasses, hearing aids and Lifelines to our member of the community, plus many other events, activities and programs."
