CHAZY The idea for a bakery came to Susan Billow shortly after the birth of her daughter, Kaelen. As a stay-at-home mom with a passion for baking, she found herself baking elaborate gifts for her husband, Leslie, to give to clients over the holidays. It was then she knew she had found her calling. I realized how happy I was doing that, Mrs. Billow explained. I loved to watch the faces on people as they opened them up. In 2007, Mrs. Billow ran Sweet Delights Bakery out of Montys Bay Marina. At the close of the season, she got serious about finding a permanent location from which to serve her delectable creations. Now housed in the former site of McKinley Furniture on State Route 9, she has all the space she needs. Filled with the warm aromas of breads baking, the cozy space includes a small seating area, as well as a display area and cavernous kitchen. One saying underlies Mrs. Billows philosophy: Homemade tastes better. With few exceptions, everything sold in Sweet Delights is 100 percent made from scratch. Everything is made in house by Mrs. Billow and her two assistants from chicken stock for the homemade soups, to English muffins and bagels, to breads and rolls for the sandwiches. Another key focus for Mrs. Billow is on customer service. We can make just about anything, she said, adding she is even willing to work with customers who have special dietary needs, such as Celiac disease where a person cannot tolerate gluten. Since its opening Dec. 19, customers have shown their enthusiasm, especially for the jumbo fruit-studded muffins, which are also sold at Lakeside Coffee in Rouses Point. Were doing quite well, smiled Mrs. Billow. Im happy with the response. In addition to the daily selection of home-baked breads and other goodies, the bakery features breakfast sandwiches, salads and sandwiches, plus two to three soups daily to eat in or take out. They also offer decorated cakes, deli meats, appetizer platters and dough for customers to make their own pizza or sweets at home. Weekly specials include chili on Thursday, michigans on Friday, spaghetti with salad and garlic bread on Saturday, and a Sunday brunch. Sweet Delights Bakery, 9592 State Route 9, is open Tuesday through Sunday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, contact 846-3488.
