LONG LAKE - The Town of Long Lake and its residents are gearing up for a traditional 4th of July celebration Sunday, July 4.
"Fourth of July celebrations are a big deal in this area," said Alexandra Verner Roalsvig, director of Parks, Recreation and Tourism. "We do our best to make Long Lake's one of the best."
The day kicks off at 11 a.m. with fun and games at the Long Lake ball field. Featured in 2010 will be sack races, scavenger hunts and egg tosses. Prizes will be awarded from the prize booth to participants.
At 4 p.m., Penelope the Clown will be at the Town Beach gazebo painting faces and entertaining. Back by popular demand, she will be joined by The North Country Kettle Corn Popcorn Man, who will return the town beach to serve up cotton candy and popcorn treats.
The Long Lake Fire Department, celebrating their 75th anniversary, will be serving their world famous sausage and peppers, hot dogs and hamburgers. All proceeds will go towards raising funds for their upcoming building projects.
Musical entertainment will be provided by the 4i Band. 4i Band is based in Binghamton and will bring the tunes of classic rock, the blues, "jam" music, jazz as well as a few surprises to Long Lake. They play music from the Allman Brothers, Eric Clapton,B.B. King, the Grateful Dead, the Beatles, Keb Mo, Phish, String Cheese Incident, Taj Mahal, Paul Carrack, the Eagles, Los Lobos, Ray Charles, The Band, Bob Dylan and many many more. They start their first set at 5 p.m.
Long Lake Bed Races will return on July 4 and begin at 6 p.m. After an absence of twenty five years, momentum for this classic Long Lake 4th of July tradition is building. This year's route will follow Bridge and Rice Road down route 30 to the Town Beach - two tenths of a mile. Entry fee is $25 per bed.
"This event became a tradition in Long Lake and it was sad to see it disappear," said Roalsvig. "I hope that this year we can re-introduce it, in hopes of it sticking around for a while."
