Looking to buy a new home, or sell the one you own? If so, you may very well need the services of a home inspector to tell you through the eyes of a professional the kind of condition the home is in.
Larry Holland started his business, A Closer Look Home Inspections, in Bellows Falls last fall, following several months of planning.
"I was looking for a new career and at the same time we were buying our home," Holland explained. "We had the house inspected. After the inspection I spoke with our home inspector and with our realtor about home inspecting, they were both very positive and encouraging."
But becoming a home inspector isn't just a matter of buying a flashlight and step ladder, it requires a good deal of training.
"I looked into the education involved," Holland said, "and choose the American Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI) training program. The ASHI program was an intensive nine months of learning and training. While going through the ASHI training program I was also working on the business side, by purchasing the necessary tools and equipment.
Holland had worked both in sales and in cabinet and instrument making, which give him a unique background for this kind of work.
"My background in sales and marketing," he said, "has been very helpful in designing my promotional materials and in following through with my marketing plan.
The task of a home inspector is to visually examine the conditions of a house, including the roof, chimney, attic, insulation, walls, ceilings, floors, foundations, windows, doors, electrical, land drainage, plumbing, safety, garage and the operating systems including heating, air conditioning, and appliances. Following the home inspection Holland will prepare for you an easy to read, detailed report.
Holland also provides home maintenance inspections and will help you in developing a prioritized to-do list.
