Eastern Mountain Sports has asked the Lake Placid Village Board of Trustees for permission to use Mid's Park on Memorial Day Weekend to celebrate the opening of its revamped store location on Main Street.
The sporting goods retailer borders Mid's Park, an open village-owned lot that is used for a variety of community events.
EMS hopes to use the space to display camping equipment and other products sold in the store. The retailer plans to include displays from its venders and host live music.
In the past, the village has discouraged all commercial use of Mid's Park. Village trustees agreed on Monday not to break that precedent by allowing sales or other direct retail activity to occur in the park.
But they didn't rule out the possibility of EMS using the park in a less overtly commercial capacity. Board members agreed to request more detailed information from the retailer before making a decision.
During the same meeting, trustees agreed to allow the Eastern Outdoor Recreation Association to use the public beach on Mirror Lake in September.
The not-for-profit hosts trade shows for sellers of outdoor gear. The main venue will take place in the 1932 Rink and Ballroom of the Olympic Center from September 12 to 14. The beach will be used during the event to display canoes and kayaks and offer test paddles to prospective buyers.
The event has not been hosted in Lake Placid for several years due to reconstruction of the Olympic Center.
