Last weekend the New York State Police arrested a 34-year-old Peru man for aggravated driving while intoxicated, for violating Leandra’s Law by having a child under 16 in a vehicle while he was intoxicated.
Police say Jamie R. Hemingway was in a 1996 Ford Ranger which was stopped on the shoulder of the Clintonville Road. The Trooper stopped to investigate why the vehicle was stopped there, and he subsequently arrested Hemingway for driving while intoxicated. Troopers determined Hemingway’s blood alcohol content to be .18 percent. At the time of his arrest, his 14-year-old son was in the truck with him.
Hemingway was also issued traffic tickets for tinted windows and unsafe tires. He was arraigned in the Town of Peru court, where he was released on his own recognizance. His case will be transferred to the town of Ausable court for further adjudication.
The child was turned over to a family member who was sober.
