CHAMPLAIN Congressman John M. McHugh will be the guest of honor at a dinner hosted by the Town of Champlain Republican Committee next week. The committee will hold a roast beef dinner at the Champlain Knights of Columbus Hall on Oak Street next Friday, Oct. 17. The dinner, which is being billed as A Tribute to John McHugh, will honor the Republican political leader, though it will be a bipartisan event, said GOP chairman Oliver M. Barie. We are personally inviting elected officials and civic and business leaders, from both sides of the aisle, said Barie. After more than 30 years of public service including 16 years in Washington, and eight years as a state senator, Congressman McHugh deserves to be recognized, in a meaningful way, for his life long commitment to the people of the North Country. In response to learning of the dinner in his recognition, McHugh said he is deeply appreciative of the Republican committees gesture and is looking forward to attending the event. It has been a privilege to serve the people of Northern New York during my 24 years of elected office, both in the New York State Senate and in Congress, said McHugh. I am very fortunate to have been given that opportunity by the residents of the 23rd District, and am committed to continuing to do my very best for the people of Northern New York in Washington. McHugh is a senior member of the House Armed Services Committee and the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. The Sub-Committee on Military Personnel, for which McHugh serves as the ranking member, is responsible for overseeing more than $70 billion in defense spending related to personnel issues. This dinner isn't about partisan politics, it is about respect, respect for a man who has gone above and beyond his duties as our representative, said Barie. I for one, as an American, and as a resident of the New York's 23rd Congressional District, cannot help but feel it necessary we give our congressman the respect and honor that he, for nearly 16 years, has given everyone of us. Next Fridays event will begin with cocktails at 5 p.m., and the dinner to follow at 6 p.m. The cost of the dinner is $12 per person or two tickets for $20. The dinner will include roast beef, corn, potatoes, salad and dessert. Seating is limited and tickets must be purchased in advance by calling 297-7741 or 420-2486.
