Q. What is the collection of diverse citizens who organized as a group in May of 1999 with the purpose of providing all manner of help throughout the Minerva/Olmstedviille community? (hint: it's still a very active part of the community).
A. The Minerva Service Organization (MSO).
The MSO continues to be an important and vital organization. Here are some accomplishments and activities of this group of people:
• Facilitated development of the Town of Minerva Emergency Preparedness Plan
• Spearheaded the fundraising effort to build a Town playground and upgrade Brannon Little League Field
• Sponsors the annual Easter egg hunt at Minerva Central School
• Provides emergency aid to community members in need
• Donates to many community causes
Recently, the MSO held its annual potluck dinner at the end of May at John and Wanda Calihan's home. Included as part of the discussion at the dinner were ongoing community support services, the Christopher and Dana Reeves Foundations fundraiser at Sporty's Iron Duke Saloon on June 11, and MSO participation at this year's Minerva Day event on Saturday, July 2. On this day the MSO will be sponsoring the "Pant, Pedal, Paddle" activity; this event is generating plenty of excitement!
In these difficult times, the MSO has reached out to many neighbors with a helping hand. With these and other growing responsibilities, the MSO would like to invite others to consider joining them is this very important service work. Membership along with a donation of time or money (via the MSO) is a very satisfying way of giving back to the community.
New members are very welcome! The MSO meets in the lower level of Minerva Town Hall at 7:00 pm on the fourth Monday of each month. Annual dues ($3) are a bargain - please come and join this worthy organization!
