This could be a very interesting season for the Mount St. Joseph boys' hoop team under second year coach Mark Benetatos. Despite only returning two players from last year's team, brings in four new players from New York including Shannon Murray, Rob Cassell, Johnathan Mitchell and 6-foot-4 power forward Jaskin Melendez. MSJ will also look to returning sophomore Matt Sanborn, who is looking to grab the starting point guard spot.
However, the exciting aspect of this team could end up being three incoming freshman - David Perry, Tyler Ackley and Zack Lanzill - who average 6-foot-4. In Division III, this will give the Mounties a decisive height advantage against most. However, these kids are freshman, therefore coach Benetatos will need his more experienced players to show leadership in helping these young players along.
The Lady Mounties will look to senior tri-captains Christy Ojala, Brianna Patton and Ashley Bathalon as the leaders of an otherwise young team, with junior Kaitin Gawet also being looked upon for her experience and toughness. Sophomore 6-footers Megan Blais and Alex Reedy ad height and depth, while up-and-coming freshman Gwen Breslin can handle the ball and could work into a point guard role.
Coach Watson has also brought in ex-MSJ player Kate Dale as an assistant coach, who connects with the players well and adds an aspect of discipline that should help this team gel and understand the importance of teamwork.
