NEWCOMB-Excitement is what characterizes the feelings that Mountaineer head coach Ed LaCourse has for the upcoming baseball season.
"We have a top of the line pitcher, some great hitters and our team has speed," he said.
Max Muller, an international student from Germany will start on the mound. Fellow senior Roger Kelly will start in the infield.
Morgan Winslow was top hitter for the Mountaineers last year and returns even stronger as a junior. He will start at short stop and also get some playing time in the outfield.
Other juniors include John LeBrecque in the outfield, Calbert Galusha in the outfield and Dakota Thompson in both the infield and outfield.
LaCourse has a big group of sophomores that will also see significant playing time during the upcoming season. Wesley Labarr, Austin Williams, Justin Viele and John Evans will transition between positions to find their niche, according to LaCourse.
With such a large group of young players, however, the Mountaineers will struggle with inexperience, said LaCourse.
"We have a lot of new players," he said. "Therefore we have a lot of question marks."
The Mountaineers were 8-2 in the league last year and 9-4 overall. They brought home the league championship and lost to top seed Schroon Lake 1-0 in the MVAC playoffs.
LaCourse is confident that if all falls into place, the team will again be on top of the league and do well in post-season play.
