SHELBURNE Nationally renown childrens author and illustrator Tomie dePaola is scheduled to read from his new book, Front Porch Tales & North Country Whoppers, on Nov. 17 at 11 a.m., at the place where pigs fly. dePaola will also autograph copies of his book, which was just released on November 1. The event is free, but the staff at the Flying Pig Bookstore asks families to register in advance, due to space constrictions. We're thrilled to be welcoming legendary author/illustrator Tomie dePaola, said co-owner Elizabeth Bluemle. This is a rare chance for book lovers to meet one of the most beloved children's authors of our time. Front Porch Tales & North Country Whoppers is jam-packed with hilarious stories featuring Vermont and New Hampshire, told with dePaola's classic warmth and accompanied by his well-crafted illustrations. One of the tales from the collection features Mothah Skunk and her family, who have to move because a man named Sherman Curtis smells too bad. Other memorable characters include lumberjacks cook Big Gertie Benson, and mailman George Petty, who has to deliver the mail during mud season. dePaola prefaces his book by explaining the deep attachment he feels for all of his characters, an attachment that comes from 35 years of living in New Hampshire. dePaola has written and/or illustrated some 200 books for children. In 1975, he received the Caldecott Honor Award for Strega Nona and in 2000 he won the Newberry Honor Award 26 Fairmont Avenue. 500 million copies of his books have been sold worldwide and have been translated into a number of different languages. He receives over 1,000 requests a year for speaking appearances noted Bluemle. We were thrilled when we were given the chance to host him. Because of dePaola's popularity with kids, a number of rules have been set in place by his publisher for the book signing. He will autograph copies of his new book and any others purchased from the bookstore; but he will autograph only one book customers bring from their home collections. He does not personalize books when he autographs them. He is happy to take a photo with anyone who wishes. The bookstore will have a camera ready to expedite this process. For additional information or to reserve autographed copies of the book if you are unable to attend this event, call The Flying Pig Bookstore at 802-985-3999.
