SARANAC LAKE - Bluseed Studios will host a new exhibition of abstract oil paintings titled "The Rhythm and Dance of Color," by artist Vel Capwell through March 8. There will be an opening reception with the artist Feb. 19 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., and the event is free and open to the public.
Capwell uses music as an important element in her current series of paintings, where the rhythms are quite apparent in her choice of color and the movement of that color on the surface.
As an artist, Capwell describes herself in this way: "I am a woman of means. Not the middling kind, as I am way left of center, but a woman who has the means to speak in more tongues than the one I was born with (that is most times locked in a perpetual state of war with my inner Director of Speechification), thanks to my gifts as a visual artist, which give me the ability to transcend pedestrian methods of communication.
"I am an older woman who has finally found her voice through her inner muse who lay dormant for many years while I was held hostage by my misguided expectations of what I thought I needed to achieve: good standing as a wife, mother, daughter, all of which meant putting everyone else's needs before my own."
When asked to describe her art, Capewell states "Much of my work is produced in layers that are partially visible as the painting evolves up to its completion. Thus there is history that can be traced as I am not creating something that obliterates what lay beneath. It can be interpreted as a palimpsest with a view. The weight of the paint is not consistent as I will use diluted pigment at times to create contrast or to bring up something that I feel needs to be more vocal in a way."
