The Vermont Farm Show is once again looking for the states leading agricultural youth. The Vermont Young Agricultural Ambassador contest recognizes one youth each year who plans to make a living in agriculture. The competition is open to males and females between the ages of 16 and 22. Knowledge of Vermont Agriculture and taking an active personal role in agricultural activities is important. Agriculture organizations are encouraged to sponsor a young person for this competition. The following basic rules govern the qualifications for participation in Vermonts Young Agriculture Ambassador Contest: All applicants must be sponsored by a Vermont agricultural organization. A maximum of two applicants may be sponsored by each organization. Applicants must be at least 16 years of age and not more than 22 years of age by contest date. Applicants must present a statement, signed by parent or guardian, allowing candidate to enter contest and consenting to the use of photographic releases for publicity purposes. Vermonts Young Agriculture Ambassador will be representing Vermont Agriculture in promotion and publicity, and will be expected to be available for a reasonable number of appearances. Vermonts Young Agriculture Ambassador will be selected by a panel of judges and honored at the annual Vermont Farm Show on Wednesday, January 30, 2008. Each contestant will receive a check for $50 with an additional $150 to the winner. Judging Criteria: Judges should meet as a group prior to meeting with the applicants. Review applications and discuss the method of questioning. Judges will interview all applicants at 6 p.m. Questions to individuals should include the following: Questions pertaining to the applicant's area of expertise. Questions regarding Vermont's agriculture in general. Questions addressing their future goals and involvement in Vermont agriculture. Judges should observe the applicant's poise, ability to express their thoughts to others, ability to present to strangers, both in the interview and addressing the audience at the presentation. Judges should assess the applicant's availability to serve as a youth spokesperson for Vermont Agriculture.
