PLATTSBURGH - Northern Puppies is open for business.
The new pet shop and pet supply store on Cogan Avenue, near the Cornelia Street intersection, was opened in February by owner Tammy Staley and is a business venture she is quite excited to see get off the ground.
"I've been wanting to do this since last April," said Staley, who originally began the business out of her home.
Northern Puppies offers animals available for adoption, including purebred puppies and smaller animals such as reptiles, guinea pigs, birds and fish. The business also offers exotic animals like frilled dragons, red eye tree frogs, chinchillas, sugar gliders, and hedgehogs.
The shop also sells a full line of pet food, clothing, and other accessories to keep pets happy and healthy, Staley said. Those getting a new pet will also receive a discount on supplies.
"So, if someone buys a new chinchilla, they get 10 percent off the cage, the water bottle, food, treats, whatever," she explained. "We're the cheapest around, by far. And, we have everything other pet shops would have."
If Northern Puppies doesn't have a particular item in stock, they can special order it, added Staley.
"We're not big enough to carry some things in the store all the time, but we can order them," she said.
Northern Puppies, located across from Tangles Hair Salon, is open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday, 12 to 6 p.m.
The business is in the process of launching a Web site and Facebook page.
"That way, if someone's looking for a puppy, they'll be able to go right on-line and see what we have," said Staley.
