Despite the wintery weather and numerous other area events the same evening, a crowd of just over 150 danced the night away at the 45th annual Orwell Fire Department's Sweethearts Ball, held at the American Legion Hall, in Middlebury Feb. 9. Music was provided by Tony Lamoureux of Tony's Sound Show. The Orwell Fire Department is pleased to announce that Hannah Korda, of Orwell, and, a junior at Fair Haven Union High School, was selected by a panel of judges to be their 2008 Sweetheart. The other contestants were Tara Barber, 1st runner-up; Megan Watrous, 2nd runner-up; and Lacey Hanson, honorable mention. Judges were Barbara and Peter Young, Cathy and Michael Dundon, and Ruth and David Pelletier. Hannah Korda's crowning is notable since she comes from a family of volunteer firefighters who served the community of Orwell. Her father, Sandy Korda, is currently an Orwell firefighter, as was her brother Nicholas, uncles Peter Orr and Tony Korda and maternal grandfather Conrad Orr. Korda is not only the third Sweetheart to be the daughter of a former Sweetheart, but her mother, Margaret Orr won in 1983, and her aunt Ellen Orr won in 1977, but she is the also the first Firefighter to win, as she is presently a Cadet with the Orwell Fire Department. Korda was presented with a tiara by last year's winner, Jayme Burnham, and in addition to a bouquet of roses, she also won a custom-made cedar chest, designed by Scott Denis, of Benson.
