The buildings on Canada St. in Lake George now hosting the Sicilian Spaghetti House, John Barleycorn’s Pub and Deshi Masala Indian Cuisine are to be torn down as soon as this fall to accommodate a six-story Marriott Hotel, if the plans of developer Dave Kenny are approved soon by the Lake George Village Planning Board. Mayor Robert Blais said this week the designs for the hotel’s exterior are to be unveiled Thursday Aug. 15 at a press conference at the Lake George Village hall.
Architectural designs for the six-story Marriott Hotel that area developer Dave Kenny is seeking to build are to be revealed at 11 a.m. Thursday Aug. 15 in a press conference at the village hall, local officials said this week, after plans for the event were finalized (The Aug. 10 edition of the Adirondack Journal cited an earlier unveiling, based on information obtained from local officials).
Village Mayor Robert Blais announced early this week that Kenny is planning to unveil designs of the hotel’s exterior, which he heard were being developed in the spirit of the village’s new architectural standards. Adopted in late July, these regulations prohibit long flat blank walls and rooflines, and call for the use of dormers, parapets, stepped roofs, balconies, cornices,wall offsets and recesses to create visual appeal and historical aesthetic value.
At the public hearing when these rules were adopted, Kenny talked about how he wanted to have the architecture of his proposed hotel to reflect historical elements of public structures once standing in Lake George. He said he appreciated the aesthetics of the buildings of the early 1900s.
“The hotel will have nice architectural features, to dovetail nicely with the past and the future of Lake George,” Kenny said.
Marriott officials have approved site plans, he said, adding they want to situate the hotel on Canada St. in the busy central village area rather than on the outskirts of Lake George.
“Marriott’s conducted market studies, and they want the hotel downtown,” he said.
Kenny said the hotel’s first floor would host upscale retail shops as well as the hotel’s lobby, and the second floor, primarily conference space — as much as 18,000 square feet — with sliding walls to create breakout rooms as needed. Floors three through six would each have 30 guest rooms, primarily offering two queen beds — but some of them would likely be suites.
“There’s definitely a need for conference facilities in downtown Lake George,” Kenny said.
Several of the upper levels would be stepped back to create exterior visual appeal, and many of the guest rooms would have balconies, he said.
Kenny recently acquired several properties along Canada St. north of Giuseppe’s Restaurant for $2.8 million to accommodate the hotel. He said that Giuseppe’s Pizzeria on the south side would be retained, but the restaurant of the same name — next door to the north — would be torn down, along with the other adjacent buildings he recently acquired. Those buildings now host the Sicilian Spaghetti House, John Barleycorn’s Pub and Deshi Masala Indian Cuisine.
Demolition could begin as soon as this fall, if the village planning board approves the plans soon enough, Kenny said.
At the Aug. 5 village meeting, the trustees approved the concept of signing over the title of Parrott St. — an access road behind Canada St. — to Kenny for a sum to be negotiated. Kenny now owns the land on both sides of the roadway, Blais said.
Construction of the new hotel could begin this next year, Kenny said at the earlier public hearing.
“This hotel could revitalize Lake George, and bring people in from all over the world,” he said.
At Thursday’s press conference, Kenny will officially submit drawings and site plans for the new hotel. Kenny also owns The Inn at Erlowest, the Clarion Inn, the Adirondack Outlet Mall and Marine Village motel on Lake George.
Before any construction occurs, the plans for the Marriott must be approved by the Adirondack Park Agency, which decided earlier this year it wouldn’t exert jurisdiction over six-story buildings in the village.
Blais said the development proposal was historic for his municipality.
“This project is the largest proposed in the Village in several years, and is expected to be the stimulus for other investments and revitalize our resort community,” he said.
