PLATTSBURGH - People have found there's a simple recipe for having a good time and they're spreading the message. It's simple: Eat. Sleep. Funk.
The band Eat.Sleep.Funk. was formed in the spring of 2009, named by the band's saxophonist, Dan Andersen, who simply named off "all of the activities necessary to having a good time," said drummer Guy Szalkowski.
"Eat.Sleep.Funk. stands out because we are a healthy, positive and fun band for everyone," said Szalkowski. "We stand out because our setlists include a little something from everyone's musical palate."
The band - which also consists of Shawn Parrotte on guitar, Daniel Gallagher on keytar/keyboards, Jamse Ward on bass, and Charlie Morgan and Olivia Benware on trombones - has a varied background and list of musical influences.
"Each person has brought a little something different to this band and I think that is why it has been so successful," said Szalkowski. "All of the members of this group contribute to writing new songs and rearranging old songs and I don't think we'd be as diverse and creative if we were all coming from the same place."
"Eat.Sleep.Funk. sounds like fun, and that is what everyone has when they come out to our shows," added Szalkowski.
The band's first live performance was last summer at the former Oraja Lounge on Brinkerhoff Street.
"Our first live gig was awesome," said Szalkowski. "We had been practicing for a while with no venue to play in, so when the day finally came, it was great just for someone else to hear what we had been working on."
Since then, Eat.Sleep.Funk. has become a fixture in the local music scene, even playing shows in Lake Placid, Saranac Lake, Au Sable Forks, and the Northern Tier. Though the band has yet to release an album, Szalkowski said they're working on a few singles to be released soon.
"We have a few things cooking up around the 'burgh for the locals, and plan to kick it strong for the returning college kids next semester," said Szalkowski.
(Editor's Note: Eat.Sleep.Funk. will be the headlining act this Sunday, July 4, at the Naked Turtle on Dock Street. The band will perform following the Independence Day fireworks celebration. Shows are also booked in the coming weeks at Olive Ridley's, Monopole, The Green Room and again at the Naked Turtle.
