WARRENSBURG Police arrested a middle-aged man Monday night they say held a younger woman against her will earlier in the day at knifepoint and sexually assaulted her in his Hudson St. apartment. Arrested on felony charges of first-degree Sexual Assault and first-degree Unlawful Imprisonment was Lawrence A. Woodard, 53, of 11 Hudson St. Warrensburg. Woodard was taken into custody at about 10:30 p.m. without resisting and sent to Warren County Jail. After a 39-woman called police at 3:21 p.m. and reported she had been held against her will at knifepoint and sexually assaulted, police surrounded the apartment building where Woodard lived, gathered evidence and searched for him a process that continued for seven hours. Woodard is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday morning at 9 a.m. Neighbors said Woodard moved to Warrensburg in 2006 after serving more than 25 years in prison in New Hampshire for stabbing a woman in 1980. As they watched the stakeout of the 11 Hudson St. building, neighbors said they and town officials had expressed concern when Woodard moved in, considering his previous charges which included rape. Warren County Sheriffs Department and state police worked jointly on the case. Traffic on Hudson St. was shut down Monday afternoon and evening until Woodard was apprehended.
