Charles A. Gould, 29, of Poultney was charged with a rape that took place more than a decade ago. The alleged incident involved the rape of a 7-year-old girl.
Police said Gould was in his late times at the time. Police also said the alleged crime took place during a camping trip.
Gould pleaded innocent to a felony charge of sexual assault in Rutland County criminal court.
Deputy State’s Attorney Jane O’Neill said that Gould should be placed in prison on $50,000 bail.
“The details are vividly remembered by the child, especially the injuries suffered,” she told reporters at court.
In the end, Judge Cortland Corsones released Gould on $25,000 with a curfew at a parent’s residence.
The woman told police she was attacked by Gould during a camping trip soon after her seventh birthday. Left alone with Gould inside a camper, the woman said she was thrown onto a bed and suffocated with a pillow while the assault took place.
