POULTNEY - The Poultney Theatre Company will present Scrooge & Company, a dramatic reading of Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol." Production shows are Saturday, Dec. 18, at the Slate Valley Museum in Granville, and Sunday, Dec. 19, in the cozy setting of the Poultney High School library. All performances are at 2 p.m., and admission is free.
Gary Meitrott who has conceived and directed this enduring Dickens' masterpiece with authentic phrasing said, "Our adaptation is the essence of Dickens', and we hold to the original feeling."
He said, "A dramatic reading is not just reading from a script but the elements of theatrical gesture and movement that adds humor and excitement to the reading. The characters are brought to life with the interaction and emotional clarity that you would find on stage."
"Theatrical reading uses a 'reader's theater style' where the actors relate to each other not on stage but between themselves and the audience as if they were the characters."
The key local actors are Bill Cruikshank, Burnham Holmes, Danielle Houston, David Mook, and Anna Whooley.
Donations are welcome and proceeds from the Poultney performance will be used to establish the Dick Wright Fund in support of the drama program at Poultney High School.
"Dick Wright was a cast member during the inaugural production in 2003. He was in every production of Shakespeare on Main Street, and 'A Christmas Carol' until his death in 2007," said Kitty Galante, board member of The Poultney Theatre Company. "Dick was the first president of our board . He was an extremely popular member of the cast and Poultney community."
Meitrott added, "Dick's enthusiasm and interest in action grew from a small part to his last production. He absolutely loved acting, every minute of it!"
"In rehearsing the production, it always truly puts me in the mood for Christmas. The actors and I are in fits of laughter and touched to the heart," said Meitrott.
Special thanks for their assistance with this year's presentation of "A Christmas Carol" go to Christine Rose, Kathryn Weller, and Tom Fitzgerald.
