GLENS FALLS - Area author and teacher Bernice Mennis will be reading from her new book Breaking Out of Prison on at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 6 at Crandall Library's Folk Life Center. In addition to reading selections from her book, she will talk about her 25 years of teaching prisoners to write and find peace.
For Bernice Mennis, teaching prisoners is not only a job, but a calling and a lens into how we all might break out of our mental prisons, a library representative said this week. Mennis' approach is to help students find their power by questioning authority, assumptions and convention. She has pursued education through questioning, including asking how people have arrived at their present situation in life. She helps people comprehend the processes and events that lead free beings into a place of powerlessness, the library publicist said. Mennis' book includes excerpts from prisoners' journals - showing reflections on their lives, relationships and present situations.
