LONG LAKE - Spring will bring a new learning opportunity to Long Lake for quilting enthusiasts. From June 27 - 30, the town of Long Lake will be hosting an Adirondack Quilt Camp at Long Lake Central School and the Long Lake Town Hall.
The event will showcase 17 different classes with 10 quilting instructors. A sampling of the classes and teachers include: Quilting -As- You- Go with Wenda Coburn, Strip Maze with Linda Bennett, Hand Appliqu with Rae Peer, and Mixed Media Art Quilt with Long Lake resident Louisa Austin Woodworth.
The talented instructors boast resumes highlighting national awards, and multiple years of instruction. Check out adirondackquiltcamp.com for photographs and full listing of the teachers and classes offered.
"We hope the events attracts all kinds of quilters," said Alexandra Verner Roalsvig, director of Long Lake parks, recreation and tourism. "Talented artisans, hobbyists, beginners, and quilt-a-holics are all welcome to gather in the heart of the Adirondack Park to sew, learn and share the unique experience of quilting."
In addition to the traditional quilt programs offered there will be a two-day children's class and a special basket making class. Some classes are designed with the Adirondack Theme as inspiration including Lu Spafford Corts design "A Day in the Adirondacks." Open Studio will also be available to work on projects uninterrupted by the demands of daily life.
Classes will be held during the day and special events are lined up for the evening. Hallie Bond will be giving a tour of the "Common Threads" quilt exhibit now in its second year at the Adirondack Museum and she will also be giving a special lecture about the vibrant quilting tradition in the Adirondack region for over a century. Other guests will be doing special quilting programs in the evening.
Roalsvig noted the phenomenal popularity that quilting as a hobby, art form, and business has recently experienced.
"It attracts 21 million avid quilters who spend $2.27 billion annually on their passion and we in Long Lake want to get in on that," she said.
