PLATTSBURGH The North Country chapter of the American Red Cross will host a Cinco de Mayo celebration, but if you wait until May 5, youll miss out on all the fun. The local Red Cross will host the event Sunday, May 4, the day before the official celebration of Cinco de Mayo, which literally means the 5th of May. Just because the event wont be held on Cinco de Mayo, doesnt mean it will be any less festive, according to Deanna LaPier, chapter emergency services director. This years Cinco de Mayo, the second of what has become an annual event, will be held at the Naked Turtle Holding Company on Dock Street, during the establishments opening weekend. The event will include performances by The Blind Pig Blues Band and Lucid. We had a blast last year, said LaPier. Its a fun night to just get out and enjoy the nice weather and show support for what the Red Cross does. Money raised through events such as the Cinco de Mayo celebration helps the chapter assist families devastated by fire or other disasters by providing emergency food, shelter and clothing, among other services. Financial support for the chapter also continues the training of its volunteers, LaPier said. The May 4 event also gives the community a chance to meet the volunteers and other chapter representatives to learn more about the American Red Cross, she added. We hope people will come out and support the event, said local Red Cross executive director Jeanie D. Roberts. By doing so, they support the programs and services the chapter provides here in the North Country. It really is a nice night to chill out and relax with the people who step forward to support us, said LaPier. Without that support, itd be very difficult to do what we do. Cinco de Mayo tickets are $10 in advance and on sale at the North Country chapter of the American Red Cross office, Olive Ridleys and Lake City Choppers. Admission at the door will be $15. The event is being sponsored by Matt Spiegel, owner of the Naked Turtle Holding Company, and Excellus Blue Cross Blue Shield. Contributions to the chapter are possible by sending tax-deductible donations, in care of the North Country Chapter of the American Red Cross, to 13 Guy Way, Plattsburgh N.Y. 12901, or by calling the chapter office at 561-7280.
