RUTLAND Shannon Switzer, daughter of Sandi and Scott Switzer of Rutland Town, has been invited to perform with the nationally acclaimed Sound of America Honor Band and Chorus during the groups European tour next summer. Shannon, a Rutland High School junior who plays the clarinet and tenor saxophone, is a member of the Rutland City Band, the Lakes Region Youth Orchestra, and Rutland High Jazz Band and Symphonic Band. Shannon garnered top honors on the clarinet and saxophone for the Green Mountain District Music Festival in 2007 and 2008, and was selected to perform at the Vermont All-State Music Festival in 2007 and 2008. She was one of a small group of clarinetist from throughout the northeast selected to perform at New England Music Festival this year. She will join other select student musicians chosen from applicants representing nearly every state when Sound of America embarks on its four-week European tour next July. Selection to Sound of America is a distinguished honor for all participants, who are carefully screened and chosen after a rigorous musical and character evaluation. Students will meet on the campus of Elizabethtown College in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania in early July for four days of intensive rehearsals. The group will depart via jet from John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York for Frankfurt, Germany. The group is scheduled to perform 11 concerts in some of Europes finest concert halls and major cathedrals including Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris and St. Marks Basilica in Venice during the 25-day tour. Students will visit Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, France and Luxembourg. Sound of America is celebrating its thirty third year in 2009, and it has received international acclaim for its exemplary success in achieving outstanding cultural relationships with European countries.
