PLATTSBURGH - Carolers found the city was in the holiday spirit as they raised approximately $1,850 for the Clinton County Christmas Bureau.
The group performed a number of Christmas classics as they visited downtown businesses and other establishments Dec. 12. In a statement from organizer Christopher J. Huchro, he remarked the amount was a record.
"I guess folks really wanted to pay us to leave this year," Huchro said.
Participants had to raise money in order to be Santa Night singers, with several raising substantial amounts, said Huchro. This year's top fundraiser was Pam Perry, who raised $1,550 for her own pledge drive and raised an additional $200 for her husband, Steve. Perry won a pair of earrings for her efforts, donated by Perrywinkle's Fine Jewelers, Plattsburgh.
Lisa Gonyo raised the second highest amount with $785, while Keena Coolidge came in third, raising $620. Both won gift certificates.
Including the amount raised by caroling, the Santa Night group has raised more than $16,000. Of that, $10,000 was donated to the Christmas Bureau and nearly $4,000 worth of toys were purchased for children of underprivileged families, said Huchro.
When a final tally is taken, Huchro said he is confident the event will raise $25,000.
