TICONDEROGA - A plan to renovate the old Moses-Ludington Hospital into senior citizen apartments is still in the works.
Liberty Affordable Housing, the company that proposed the project, failed to secure the expected grant funding this summer. But the project is still alive, according to Rich Gordon, regional property manager for the firm.
"The funding was approved at the regional level, but the state just ran out of money before it reached us," he said. "The New York State Division of Housing really liked our proposal. There wasn't enough money to go around."
Gordon said the Ticonderoga plan will be submitted for grant funding again in February. He believes the project will be funded in 2011 and construction can start that fall.
The $4 million renovation would create 28 apartments, a community room, common areas, a multi-purpose room, lounge, laundry, storage, security office and lobby in the building adjacent to the current hospital. The three-floor building would be made handicap accessible.
Liberty and Ti officials have been working on the project the past four years. The process included an Adirondack Park Agency map change in 2007 that made the project exempt from Adirondack Park Agency oversight.
The old MLH building is owned by Inter-Lakes Health, which owns and operates the current hospital, nursing home and adjacent Lord Howe Estates senior housing complex. The plan is for the senior apartments to be operated by CRM Rental management, which now operates Lord Howe Estates in conjunction with Inter-Lakes Health.
