Ticonderoga crushed Seton Catholic, 38-19, in the Section VII Class C boys basketball tournament championship game March 1 at SUNY-Plattsburgh. Its the fourth title in five years for the Sentinels and gave them a berth in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association tournament. I had high hopes for this season and had actually hoped for more wins, but we are certainly very happy with winning the sectional championship in Class C, Ti Coach Dan Dorsett said. We always strive to make it to the state tournament. The Sentinels opened state tournament play yesterday against Section X champion Brushton-Moira at 7:45 p.m. at the SUNY-Plattsburgh fieldhouse. It was a strong defensive effort that keyed the Ticonderoga victory. The Sentinels held Seton Catholic to a single hoop in the third period. We are really playing our best defense right now of the season and if we can keep improving offensively we may have a chance this Friday against Brushton-Moira, Dorsett said. Leading Seton Catholic 19-12 at the intermission, Ticonderoga started the second half with a 17-2 run the broke the game open and secured the championship. Hunter Denno, who had a game-high 14 points, drilled a pair of three-point shots to key the Sentinel spurt. With a 36-14 advantage in the final quarter, Ticonderoga played its bench and coasted to the victory. Matt Streeter added eight points and Jake Kelly seven for the winners. This is the second trip to state playoff action this academic year for seven members of the Ti team. They were members of the Sentinel football team that advanced to the state championship game last fall.
