We live in a sex crazed world. The media industry counts on it to make a profit. The masses are instructed by these people on how sex works, when to have it, and who to have it with. And Christians unfortunately are falling under the world's influence. It is becoming more and more difficult to find men and women who are choosing to live Godly lives in the area of sex and marriage. Even within the church it is becoming a rare thing. People who profess to love and obey God will turn right around and refuse to yield this part of their lives over to God.
Read this passage in 1 Thessalonians 4:7-8, "For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life. Therefore, he who rejects this instruction does not reject man but God, who gives you his Holy Spirit". This verse follows a section of scripture (verses 3-8) in which Paul is describing what a Christian's life is to look like compared to those who do not know God. The Christian man or woman is not to live a life filled with "passionate lust", but rather to live a life free from sexual immorality. What does sexual immorality look like? Very simple. The Bible gives us the answer in 1 Corinthians 7:2, "But since there is so much immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband". Anything that falls outside of the confines of marriage is deemed sexual immorality.
The way to live is clear for all men and women, especially those who claim to know Christ. We Christians must keep our lives holy and clean. That means if you are not married, you must wait on sex until it is protected by the bonds of marriage. This verse would even teach us about what we are to watch on TV, the movies we attend, the music we listen to, the conversations we have at work and with friends. How about your internet usage? Again that is something that must be brought under submission to God. Some of us never stop to consider the many sexual influences that enter into our minds.
And what happens to those Christians who decide not to live in obedience in this area? This verse makes a chilling accusation, "Therefore, he who rejects this instruction [about sexual immorality] does not reject man but God, who gives you his Holy Spirit". Dear Christian, would you be so bold as to stand up and openly defy the Lord God? I have a hard time believing that anyone who loves God would do such a thing. Yet when you choose to live in sexual immorality, that is exactly what the Scriptures teach you are doing! You have chosen to reject God. We think that the sexual aspects of our lives are personal and private, and that no one has any say in the matter. We forget that God designed sex, and he protected it and exalted it within marriage. The choice to live obediently in regards to sex, is to make a choice to honor God.
