SHELBURNE Its that time of year when the weather starts getting warmer and the sap starts flowing. Well, its not that warm yet, but that wont stop the folks at Shelburne Farms from holding a Maple Community Potluck on Sunday, March 9 starting at 5 p.m. Melissa Pasanen and Rick Gencarelli co-authors of the hit cookbook Cooking with Shelburne Farms: Food and Stories from Vermont will be on hand to demonstrate several recipes from the two chapters devoted to Vermonts sweet and savory staple. Shelburne Farms will provide guests a choice of several entrees. Mark Klonicke, the sugarmaker at Shelburne Farms, will also be present at the potluck to share his knowledge about all things maple. According to Klonicke, the Potluck doesnt kick off the official start to the maple season, but its as good a time as any. The season usually starts around the beginning of March and runs through April, he said. There isnt a definite start or stop because of Mother Nature. Either way, the Potluck is a great event. A potluck held last September was a great success because of the cookbooks popularity. With the cookbooks recent inclusion in Food & Wine magazines Best of the Best cookbook, the March 9 potluck promises to be a large scale event, so make sure to sign-up early. Later on in March, Shelburne Farms will host the Maple Open House Weekend. This event will offer guests a chance to visit the sugarbush and participate in hands-on maple activities if youve ever wondered how to tap a tree for sap, this is the event for you. A self-guided tour will also be available so patrons can observe the sugar-making-process in person. The Open House is scheduled for March 29 and 30, and on each day the Shelburne Explorers 4-H will serve a pancake breakfast from 9 a.m. to noon in the Farm Barn Education Center. Those interested in attending the Open House do not need to register in advance, and it only costs $7 for adults and $4 for children. The money will benefit the 4-H clubs dairy project.
