MORRISONVILLE - Constantly brainstorming new ways to expand the business, Shingle Street Septic Service has now found a way to help cancer research.
The company recently purchased two new portable restrooms. Not in the typical green color they usually rent out ... but pink.
"The reason they're pink is because every time we rent them out, we're going to donate $5 to breast cancer research," said bookkeeper Lori Rennie, "or some kind of cancer services or research."
Owner Barry White got the idea after learning of a man in Florida who had a similar plan.
"At first I was kind of hesitant," White explained. "Pink toilets could be hard to keep clean. We're really fussy about keeping our other toilets clean."
However, after thinking about it throughout the winter, White decided to go ahead with the idea.
"My mother and my grandmother both died of cancer," he said. "Anything we can do to help out, I'm willing to give it a whirl."
Whenever someone chooses to rent one of the pink restrooms from the business, Shingle Street will donate $5 in the name of the person who is renting, as well as the business. At the end of the year, however much the business has made, they will match it again.
"We're trying to hook up with local [organizations] to be able to do that," Rennie said. "Like CVPH Foundation."
The business will also be lending its services during the 2010 Relay for Life of Plattsburgh, this June 19-20.
"For that event we are actually donating those particular toilets for that event. We're not even going to charge them," said Rennie.
Shingle Street Septic Service also has portable restrooms that are ADA compliant.
"Not all larger portable restrooms are," Rennie explained. "Ours happen to be. We bought them specially so that if there was an event where they had to have those handicapped toilets, that they would be fully ADA compliant."
Those restrooms are large enough for a wheelchair to fit in and turn around and have a flat floor so wheelchairs can easily roll in.
The business has also been expanding, not just through their portable restrooms, but in other aspects as well.
"We started a plumbing business last year," White said. "We've been real busy with that. People are really, really happy."
They also do toilet inspections and septic systems, White added.
"It keeps us busy," he said.
