A local police department recently received federal asset forfeiture funds to purchase new equipment.
Appearing in Malone last Wednesday, North Country Congressman Bill Owens presented Saranac Lake Village Police Chief Bruce Nason with a check for $5,000.
The funds are presented regularly to law enforcement agencies belonging to the Franklin County Border Narcotics Task Force, which includes the county Sheriff's Department, the District Attorney's office, and the Saranac Lake, Tupper Lake and Malone police departments.
Nason says the funds are compiled through regional drug and asset seizures and awarded to departments involved in specific investigations.
According to Nason, the most recent award will be used to outfit police cruisers with wireless internet capabilities.
"We'll be able to access our servers from the vehicles," he said. "That let's us upload information directly from the cruiser computers to our computers at the station."
Nason says that will improve efficiency at the police department, and allow for greater communication with other agencies.
