Veteran state legislator and former dairy farmer Harvey Smith of New Haven has reentered the political arena. "I can no longer sit on the sidelines and watch Vermont's economy deteriorate," Smith said.
Smith said he will seek the state legislator's seat for Addison District 5 seat in the Vermont House.
Smith said that "b expanding our economic base, we will also increase our tax revenues to fund our state budget without increasing our tax rates."
Smith, a beef and soybean farmer and consultant, held the seat for four terms from 1999-2006 and served on the Vermont State House Agriculture Committee, playing key roles in legislation elevating the Vermont Agriculture Department to a cabinet-level agency status, creating the Vermont Farm Viability Enhancement Program and implementing economic initiatives to promote innovative farm-based energy and nutrient managements practices.
He has a long record of public service and a wealth of experience. Smith said he has been urged by a number of residents from Bridport, New Haven and Weybridge to run for the seat he once held and put his talents and experiences back to work for Vermonters.
